WITH the anticipated appointment of a Customs commissioner, the Philippine Government Employees’ Association has recommended a former bemedalled police officer for the position.

The PGEA, the largest association of government employees, cited Orpilla’s record as his strongest credential.

Ocampo believed that with his masteral, doctoral and law degrees from educational institutions here and abroad, Orpilla is prepared for the job.

Ocampo added that besides the PGEA, Orpilla is endorsed by non-government organizations from various sectors.

Some local government officials and administration allies in Congress are also pushing for Orpilla’s appointment.

Orpilla is a four-time recipient of the Medalya ng Kadakilaan and a PNP heroism medal for gallantry and heroism during an armed encounter with heavily armed dissidents on November 21, 1996.

Orpilla was adjudged the “best Narcom officer” in 1990 for single handedly busting a drug syndicate linked to the notorious International Bamboo Gang.
